Da poco terminata la proiezione stampa dell'attesissimo crime movie, ma presentato Fuori Concorso a Venezia 72, dall'evocativo titolo Black Mass, con protagonista un irriconoscibile e ferino Johnny Depp nei panni del più sanguinoso gangster della storia della città di Boston, James "Whitey" Bulger.
Da mesi annunciato come il film che avrebbe riportato alla luce della ribalta il talento trasformista di Depp dopo svariati passi falsi negli ultimi anni, era prevedibile dunque una certa attesa per il responso della stampa internazionale.
Stando ai primi commenti a caldo sulla pellicola diretta da Scott Cooper ("Crazy Heart", "Il Fuoco della Vendetta"), siamo di fronte ad un gangster movie alquanto convenzionale, dallo stile solido, classico, ma alquanto scolastico; in definitiva, Cooper non è Martin Scorsese!
E Depp? Nonostante la quantità impressionante di trucco a cui si è sottoposto per calarsi nei panni di Bulger, sembra aver convinto la platea internazionale che ha visto la pellicola in World Premiere, soprattutto i giornalisti di The Hollywood Reporter e Variety, che lo hanno particolarmente osannato. Più tiepide le reazioni "europee":

Insomma, se il film gioca con i procedimenti canonici del genere senza particolari guizzi, nonostante sia un ottimo film d'entertainment, viene retto dalla inquietante performance di Johnny Depp, fortunatamente non soltanto un spaventosa maschera di trucco, ma uno dei suoi lavori attoriali più convincenti di sempre. Quarta Nomination in arrivo per l'attore statunitense?
