A partire da quest'anno i decennali MTV Movie Awards cambiano volto e target; abbracciando anche i nuovi fenomeni televisivi, i premi cinematografici più irriverenti e "teen" d'America cambiano nome e si trasformano in MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Nella prima edizione di questa nuova veste dominano sia alcuni titoli per il grande schermo totalmente inaspettati, sia alcune delle serialità più seguite dell'ultimo anno; la divisione tra cinema e televisione è soltanto marcata dalle categorie "Movie of the Year" e "Show of the Year", mentre le restati cinquine, soprattutto quelle attoriali, sono "ibride".
A dominare con ben 6 Nomination l'indie horror Scappa - Get Out do Jordan Peele campione d'incassi USA nelle ultime settimane ed in uscita in Italia a partire dal prossimo 18 Maggio; a seguire con il numero di candidature La bella e la bestia e lo show Netflix Stranger Things con quattro menzioni ognuno. Con tre Nomination ciascuno seguono Il trono di spade il premio Oscar Moonlight.
I vincitori saranno annunciati il 7 Maggio 2017.
