Il titolo più atteso di questa edizione del New York Film Festival, è stato senza dubbio il nuovo film di Woody Allen, Wonder Wheel, che oggi ha chiuso le proiezioni del festival newyorkese al suo ultimo giorno. Già dal primo trailer rilasciato online traspariva una nuova via per Allen e un ritorno in gran forma per Kate Winslet, già pronosticata tra le migliori attrici dei prossimi Oscar. Tuttavia le prime reazioni del pubblico del festival non sembrano delle più rosee.
Già visibilmente ispirato a Un tram chiamato desiderio di Tennessee Williams, Wonder Wheel viene definito come un melodramma fin troppo vecchio stile, dove Allen non perde la sua cifra stilistica, ma indugia fin troppo sullo sviluppo dei personaggi e sulla sceneggiatura in sé.
Un debutto mediocre per Allen e Winslet, decisamente lontani da una nomination all'Oscar, eppure è il nostrano Vittorio Storaro a convincere pienamente. Con la sua fotografia sembra aver stregato il pubblico di New York, e rappresenta il vero punto di forza del film fin troppo alleniano, forse nostalgico, ma non proprio coraggioso.
