La settantacinquesima edizione dei Golden Globe ci ha finalmente consegnato un vero e proprio favorito per la corse all'Oscar che si concluderà il prossimo marzo, infatti a trionfare in quella che era a tutti gli effetti uno scontro a due tra Tre Manifesti a Ebbing Missouri e The Shape of Water è stato il film dell'inglese Martin McDonagh.
In una serata fortemente segnata dall'attuale clima politico in cui le donne hanno avuto un ruolo di rilievo, è curioso notare come tutti i film e le serie che hanno trionfato nelle categorie principali (fatta esclusione per il solo film d'animazione) siano racconti con protagoniste donne. A trionfare in termini numerici nelle categorie cinematografiche è stato Tre Manifesti a Ebbing Missouri che ha portato a casa ben 4 premi di peso: miglior film drammatico, miglior sceneggiatura, miglior attrice protagonista per Frances McDormand ed un po' a sorpresa miglior attore non protagonista per Sam Rockwell. Conquista invece due premi Lady Bird che viene incoronato miglior film commedia mentre la sua protagonista, Saoirse Ronan, viene premiata come miglior attrice in un film commedia e si candida automaticamente come frontrunner per i prossimi Oscar; sono due anche i premi conquistati da The Shape of Water, favorito della vigilia e film con più candidature (ben 7), che nonostante abbia dovuto cedere il passo a Tre Manifesti è comunque riuscito ad ottenere i riconoscimenti per la partitura originale di Alexandre Desplat e per la regia di Guillermo Del Toro.
Non sono mancate le sorprese, soprattutto nelle categorie attoriali dove Allison Janney per il suo ruolo in I, Tonya è riuscita a battere la rivale Laurie Metcalf di Lady Bird, dove Sam Rockwell è riuscito ad imporsi sul favorito Willem Dafoe e Frances McDormand ha trionfato su Sally Hawkins, tanto pronosticata protagonista di The Shape of Water. Se si esclude un premio speciale ricevuto per America oggi, quello di quest'anno è il primo Golden Globe vinto dalla McDormand, anche il veterano Gary Oldman, che per di più non era mai stato nominato, ha conquistato il primo Globo della sua carriera. Per James Franco, che per l'occasione si è presentato sul palco con il vero Tommy Wiseau, quello vinto con The Disaster Artist è invece il secondo trofeo vinto presso la HFPA. Tra i film d'animazione trionfa l'ormai lanciatissimo Coco mentre tra i film stranieri ad avere la meglio è il tedesco In the Fade, fischiato a Cannes ma accolto bene negli States. Il duo Pasek & Paul invece ritira il secondo premio consecutivo alla miglior canzone per "This Is Me" da The Greatest Showman dopo aver trionfato lo scorso anno (sia ai Globe che agli Oscar) con l'indimenticabile "City of Stars" da La La Land. Escono invece sconfitti Chiamami col tuo nome, Get Out e Dunkirk che non hanno ottenuto alcun riconoscimento.
Per quanto riguarda il versante televisivo invece c'è stato un trionfo schiacciante di Big Little Lies, la serie prodotta e interpretata da Nicole Kidman e Reese Witherspoon già vincitrice di 8 Emmy. Si tratta di un record per il settore televisivo, dove trionfare in 4 categorie differenti è molto raro, la serie HBO ci è riuscita grazie ai premi alla miglior miniserie, alla miglior attrice protagonista per la Kidman, al miglior attore non protagonista per Alexander Skarsgard e alla miglior attrice non protagonista per Laura Dern. Altri risultati notevoli sono quelli registrati da The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel e The Handmaids Tale che hanno riportato entrambi due vittorie, quella alla miglior serie e quella per le proprie protagonista Rachel Brosnahan e Elisabeth Moss (al suo secondo premio). Si tratta del primo anno in cui a vincere come miglior serie drammatica e comica sono due serie tv di un servizio streaming, rispettivamente di Amazon e Hulu; per Amazon inoltre si tratta della terza vittoria in tre anni nella categoria dedicata alle serie di genere commedia, prima di The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel infatti avevano già trionfato Mozart in the Jungle e Transparent, i competitor Hulu e Netflix hanno invece riportato solo una vittoria a testa come miglior serie. Grazie ai premi vinti da Big Little Lies, HBO è il network più premiato della serata. Tra gli altri vincitori della serata anche Aziz Ansari, Sterling K. Brown ed Ewan McGregor, al loro primo riconoscimento e Oprah Winfrey che, premiata con il prestigioso Cecil B. DeMille Award alla carriera, ha preso il palco per un ispirato discorso di stampo socio politico.
