Il primo film in lingua inglese di Felix Van Groeningen è stato presentato alla stampa nordamericana in occasione del Toronto International Film Festival, ma non ha convinto come avrebbe dovuto; il dramma con protagonisti i candidati all'Oscar Steve Carell e Timothée Chalamet divide la critica.
Descritto come un dramma sulla dipendenza da droga piuttosto convenzionale, Beautiful Boy è ispirato alla storia vera della coppia padre-figlio David e Nic Sheff, e di conseguenza sulle loro autobiografie dedicate al delicato periodo della loro vita.
Lungometraggio che non andrà molto lontano in orizzonte Oscar, è retto tuttavia dalle performance maschili di Carell e Chalamet, possibili nomi che rivedremo nelle nomination di fine anno.
"Qualcuno può spiegarmi cosa è successo al mio bellissimo figlio? Cosa ho fatto di sbagliato?": queste sono le strazianti domande che David Shelf si pone quando si sveglia ogni giorno. Suo figlio Nic ha appena 18 anni ed è dipendente dal crystal meth. Con il suo problema, Nic non mette in pericolo solo il suo futuro ma anche quello di tutta la sua famiglia. David dovrà resistere a tutto pur di salvare suo figlio.
