The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel domina questa edizione degli Emmy con un totale di cinque premi ed una predominanza assoluta nella categorie dedicate alle serie comedy. Sul versante delle serie drammatiche invece è Il trono di spade a portare a casa il premio principale (il terzo per la serie), pur senza imporsi nelle altre categoria; infatti c'è stato un certo equilibrio nelle categorie drama che hanno visto dividere equamente i premi principali tra Il trono di spade, The Crown e la sorpresa di questa edizione, The Americans, tutte ferme a due premi. Sempre due sono le statuette conquistate dalla comedy rivelazione Barry, grazie alle vittorie di Bill Hader e del veterano Henry Winkler, premiato dopo ben 42 anni dalla prima candidatura.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace trionfa a sorpresa nella categoria dedicata alla miglior miniserie e conquista un totale di tre premi grazie alle inaspettate vittorie di Darren Criss come attore protagonista e di Ryan Murphy come regista. A tenere testa al secondo capitolo della serie antologica di Murphy c'è Godless che conquista le due statuetta attoriali di supporto per Jeff Daniels e Merritt Wever. Tra gli altri premiati della serata Thandie Newton conquista l'unico premio di Westworld, Black Mirror conquista il suo secondo premio consecutivo alla miglior sceneggiatura grazie all'episodio USS Callister e Regina King vince il suo terzo Emmy grazie alla già cancellata Seven Seconds.
In una serata caratterizzata da momenti molto politici e da una proposta di matrimonio in diretta, non è emerso un reale vincitore tra i vari network candidati alla prestigiosa statuetta. Quella del 2018 è stata infatti un'edizione molto equilibrata, nella quale lo scontro Netflix-HBO si è risolto con un pareggio (6 premi a testa), con FX e Amazon che seguono a breve distanza (5 premi). Il vero sconfitto è però Hulu che con la sua The Handmaid's Tale, nonostante la vittoria dello scorso anno e la pioggia di nomination di quest'anno, non è riuscita a portare a casa neanche una statuetta.
