Il 73° Festival di Cannes non avrà luogo quest'anno a causa delle misure restrittive del governo francese legate agli eventi culturali che possano generare movimento e assembramenti di persone; un'occasione cinematografica imperdibile che però è stata ovviata dall'annuncio ufficiale della Selezione 2020, curata dal Presidente del festival Pierre Lescure e il Delegato Thierry Fremaux.
Sono ben 54 i film della Selezione Ufficiale, senza distinzioni di competizione; 54 titoli da tutto il mondo che verranno presentati in anteprima mondiale nei circuiti festivalieri autunnali, che ospiteranno alcuni di questi titoli con l'etichetta esclusiva "Cannes 2020". La 77° Mostra d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia non parteciperà a questa iniziativa.
Nella lista dei 54 film della Selezione Ufficiale spiccano The French Dispatch di Wes Anderson, Soul di Pete Docter, Ammonite di Francis Lee, Druk di Thomas Vinterberg,m Aya and the Witch di Goro Miyazaki, e alcuni episodi della miniserie Small Axe di Steve McQueen. Non è presente l'Italia nei titoli in anteprima:
