Gli Emmy di quest'anno ci hanno riservato poche sorprese ed hanno confermato le favorite della vigilia, che fino a questo momento avevano raccolto premi presso tutte le cerimonie dell'anno. Stiamo parlando di Succession, Watchmen e Schitt's Creek, che oltre ad aver trionfato nelle categorie principali, hanno anche raccolto più premi di qualunque altra serie.
Schitt's Creek vince ogni singola categoria nella quale era candidato questa notte, portando a casa sette statuette, che unite alle due vinte durante i Creative Arts Emmy Awards portano il totale a nove, un numero da record. Nessun'altra serie comedy, infatti, aveva mai vinto tanti premi in una sola serata, il record precedente era stato segnato da La fantastica signora Maisel, che si era fermato ad otto.
Watchmen porta il totale dei suoi riconoscimenti a 11, vincendo in molte categorie, ma perdendo inaspettatamente in regia e in due categorie attoriali. Succession, invece, cede solo sugli interpreti di supporto, conquistando tutte le altre categorie nelle quali era candidato.
Tra gli interpreti c'è da segnalare la vittoria a sorpresa di Jeremy Strong, che batte il compagno di set e favorito della serata Brian Cox, ma ancora più stupefacente è la vittoria di Zendaya per Euphoria. L'attrice alla sua prima candidatura diventa l'interprete più giovane mai premiata nella categoria, battendo un record stabilito solo lo scorso anno da Jodie Comer. Mentre Catherine O'Hara diventa la seconda attrice più anziana mai premiata nella categoria dedicata alle protagoniste di serie comedy.
Regina King trionfa come miglior attrice in una miniserie, conquistando la quarta statuetta attoriale in carriera, un numero che le permette di eguagliare il record di Alfre Woodard e diventare l'interprete di colore più premiata della storia degli Emmy. Uzo Aduba, invece, arriva a quota tre vittorie, chissà che in futuro non possa anche lei raggiungere la King.
Tra i network il vincitore assoluto della serata è HBO, che conquista undici premi, trenta se si aggiungono quelli delle categorie tecniche. Non da sottovalutare, poi, è il fatto che l'emittente abbia vinto tre delle quattro categorie principali. Grande sconfitto della serata è Netflix, che porta a casa solo due ulteriori riconoscimenti.
