L'associazione della critica di San Diego e di San Francisco hanno decretato all'unisono che Il potere del del cane di Jane Campion è il miglior film dell'anno; il film vincitore di 3 Golden Globe è quindi tra i lungometraggi più premiati dell'anno in numeri assoluti.

Tra gli interpreti scelti, da notare l'ex-aequo per la miglior attrice tra Caitriona Balfe in Belfast e Penelope Cruz in Madres Paralelas, miglior attore Nicolas Cage in Pig a San Diego, a San Francisco l'inossidabile Benedict Cumberbatch:
