Moonlight trionfa tra i film drammatici ma porta a casa un solo premio, così come Manchester by the Sea che ottiene solo il premio per Casey Affleck. Sorprende invece Elle che conquista il premio per il miglior film straniero e per la miglior attrice, che Isabelle Huppert sia ora la frontrunner per i prossimi Oscar? Altra sorpresa è il premio come miglior attore non protagonista andato ad Aaron Taylor-Johnson che ha sconfitto un’agguerrita concorrenza che vedeva Mahershala Ali e Jeff Bridges favoriti per la statuetta.
Tra le serie trionfano invece Atlanta e The Crown (prima serie Netflix a vincere come miglior serie) con due vittorie a testa mentre tra le miniserie guadagna il massimo riconoscimento American Crime Story: il caso O.J. Simpson ma The Night Manager ottiene ben 3 premi attoriali.
La serata dei Globe ha poi regalato agli spettatori almeno due momenti memorabili: la sequenza musicale iniziale e il sentito discorso di Meryl Streep per il premio alla carriera.
