Il film con il maggior numero di candidature è C’era una volta a… Hollywood con ben 11 nomination, seguono The Irishman e la vera sorpresa di questa edizione, Waves, con 9, mentre Booksmart, Joker, 1917 e The Farewell ne ottengono 7.
I registi candidati sono 10, 5 uomini e 5 donne, a cui sono dedicate due diverse categorie. Le candidate alla miglior regista donna sono Greta Gerwig, Lorene Scafaria, Olivia Wilde, Lulu Wang e Alma Har’el, tutte autrici di film molto apprezzati nel corso della stagione che non sfigurano affatto in confronto alla cinquina di colleghi uomini, composta da pesi massimi come Tarantino, Scorsese e Baumbach.
