Tony Awards nominations 2013

Sono state appena annunciate le nominations ai prossimi Tony Awards, gli Oscar del teatro Americano.

In un anno in cui solo le nuove produzioni musicali (Matilda, di Tim Minchin, che trasloca da Londra a Broadway per la prima volta; Kinky Boots, scritto dal leggendario Harvey Fierstein) hanno veramente tentato di combattere la crisi con la creatività, le pièce si sono “adagiate” sul revival e sulla scelta di attori di cinema, il cui nome di richiamo si sperava portasse pubblico in sala. I Tonys, in controtendenza, hanno escluso i nomi popolari che hanno affollato i teatri in questo anno. Via, dunque, Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johannson (con tutto il battage pubblicitario costruito attorno alla sua Gatta sul tetto che scotta, la mancata nomination è uno smacco grande) e perfino Jessica Chastain, che pure è stata molto apprezzata nel revival de L’ereditiera (The Heiress). Sopravvive alla decimazione solo Tom Hanks, interprete acclamatissimo di Lucky Guy, ultima opera di Nora Ephron, rappresentata postuma.

Tra i candidati, è dunque possibile rintracciare tanti, tantissimi attori che hanno fatto del teatro il loro unico mestiere, quegli attori totalmente devoti al palcoscenico, le seconde file che agganciano l’occasione della vita, le piccole grandi leggende.

Menzione anche per Tracy Letts, osannato autore teatrale e sceneggiatore (Bug, Osage County, Killer Joe) che torna a recitare in Chi ha paura di Virginia Woolf? (produzione Steppenwolf Company di Chicago), un revival che potrebbe finalmente portare a Amy Morton il suo primo meritatissimo Tony (un’attrice da tenere d’occhio anche per i prossimi Oscar!). Alternativa, In viaggio verso Bountiful, con la veterana Cecily Tyson.

La partita più aperta appare tuttavia quella dei musical, con le due opere già citate che andranno a scontrarsi praticamente in tutte le categorie. Tra gli attori, tuttavia, da tenere assolutamente d’occhio il revival di Edwid Drodd, per cui non dovrebbe esserci partita: la migliore performance dell’anno è quella di Stephanie J. Block, insieme a Will Chase, relegato nella categoria (più difficile) dei non protagonisti dove si segnala la presenza di Terrence Mann (Pippin), che già fu Javert e la Bestia in due dei musical di maggiore successo di sempre.

Da segnalare il successo di Cinderella, che riporta Rodgers & Hammerstein all’antico splendore. Un musical classico, che richiede voci e performer con una formazione all’antica. Victoria Clarke (già vincitrice di un Tony) e Laura Osnes sono perfette. Ricordiamo che, a suo tempo, l’interprete principale fu Julie Andrews… Un’opera tutta da riscoprire!
