A lungo slittato, dalla post-produzione burrascosa, il nuovo film di Xavier Dolan, regista di Mommy e Laurence Anyways, approda finalmente al Toronto International Film Festival per la sua anteprima mondiale. Ieri la proiezione del film per il pubblico canadese, che come accade di consueto per le pellicole di Dolan, si divide a metà.
Le prime recensioni da siti di lingua francese come LaPresse, definiscono il film "non il massimo, ma nemmeno un disastro"; o un "passo falso" per Dolan, "un film che, volendo fare troppo, ha mancato tutti i suoi obiettivi" [x]. The Playlist è la prima testata americana a recensire il film, dando una bassa C-, criticando la sceneggiatura del film: "dovrebbe iniziare a lavorare con uno sceneggiatore migliore di Xavier Dolan". Allo stesso modo aspra la critica di The Hollywood Reporter, che definisce i dialoghi del film sgraziati, insalvabili anche da veterane come Susan Sarandon e Kathy Bates, "sembra essere così innamorato di questi personaggi autobiografici, da non riuscire a renderli lontanamente affascinanti".
Sul versante di Twitter i pareri invece tendono a dividersi. Le reaction confermano i pareri della critica in parte, ma ne emerge anche un forte entusiasmo. Gli ammiratori del regista non ne sono rimasti affatto delusi, elogiando la narrazione, il cast e un'azzeccata colonna sonora.

Con Jacob Tremblay, Natalie Portman, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Thandie Newton e Kit Harrington tra i protagonisti, La mia vita con John F. Donovan racconta la storia di una giovane star televisiva, di nome John F. Donovan, che in un momento di crisi inizia una relazione epistolare con Rupert Turner, aspirante attore che vive con la madre in Inghilterra. Quando lo scambio di lettere viene reso pubblico in maniera fin troppo ambigua, ne consegue uno scandalo che distrugge la carriera di John. Dieci anni dopo, durante un'intervista, Rupert incontrerà per la prima volta il suo idolo di un tempo.
Il film non ha ancora una distribuzione per gli USA, mentre in Italia verrà distribuito da Lucky Red in una data ancora imprecisata.
