Con 32 nomination l’ottava stagione Il trono di spade è in assoluto la serie più candidata agli Emmy 2019, avendo battuto il record per la singola stagione più candidata al premio. Allo stesso tempo, la sua emittente, la HBO è la rete televisiva con il maggior numero di candidature, ben 137, 20 in più rispetto a quelle ottenute da Netflix. Lo scontro tra HBO e Netflix lo scorso anno era terminato in parità.
Sorprendente nelle categorie drammatiche l’assenza di Homecoming, mentre tra le serie comedy stupisce la massiccia presenza di Schitt’s Creek e Fleabag, con Barry e The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel che si preparano a dare del filo da torcere all’ultima stagione di Veep. Da notare nelle categorie dedicate alle miniserie il testa a testa tra Chernobyl e la candidatissima When They See Us, ha invece riscosso meno successo di quanto lecito aspettarsi Sharp Objects di Jean-Marc Vallée, che non ottiene la nomination alla regia.
Tra le serie drammatiche spiccano le candidature ottenute da The Handmaid’s Tale, teoricamente ineleggibile per la terza stagione, ma rientrata con episodi appartenenti alla seconda.
La settantunesima edizione dei premi Emmy si terrà a Los Angeles il 22 settembre 2019. La cerimonia di premiazione potrebbe seguire i passi degli Oscar e non avere un conduttore. A precedere la serata principale ci sarà, il 14 settembre, la premiazione dei Creative Emmy, ovvero la cerimonia dedicata ai premi tecnici.
