Ai 37esimi Independent Spirit Awards il trionfo è tutto di Maggie Gyllenhaal e il suo debutto alla regia cinematografica, grazie a La figlia oscura si porta a casa i premi per il miglior film, la miglior regia e la miglior sceneggiatura.

Tra gli interpreti premiati, Simon Rex per Red Rocket, Ruth Negga per Passing e Troy Kotsur per CODA, quest’ultimo sempre più proiettato verso gli Oscar dopo la vittoria i Sag. Miglior film straniero è Drive My Car.
